John began working at the age of 10, while he lived in the Hollis neighborhood of Queens, working, amongst other things, selling newspapers for $2 an hour. In high school, he took part in a program in which he alternated each work working a full-time job and attending school, which he says is what gave him his entrepreneurial mindset. After graduating high school, he worked as a waiter at Red Lobster and started a van commuter service.

After receiving $300,000 in orders, his mother took out a second mortgage to help pay for fulfilling the orders as well as taking out an ad in the paper to ask for help. To date, FUBU has generated over $6 billion in sales since then.
