Born in 1983 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Afkham learned to play the piano as a boy. At fifteen he began training at the Hochschule fur Musik Freiburg, where he was mentored by James Avery. 

Afkham garnered his first serious attention when in 2002 he won the Jugend Musiziert competition. In the years that followed he turned toward conducting, studying under Nicolas Pasquet at Weimar’s Hochschule fur Musik Franz Liszt. In 2008 Afkham won the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition, which earned him his first professional post with the London Symphony Orchestra. In 2010 he was also made assistant conductor of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in Vienna. 

Afkham has since held posts at a number of leading orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is a fellow of Bayreuth’s Richard Wagner Association, and since 2014 serves as the primary conductor for the Orquesta Nacional de Espana.
