The band was founded by frontman Tim Kasher during the late Nineties in Omaha, Nebraska. They released a couple of EP’s early on and then their first full-length album, Such Blinding Stars for Starving Eyes, in 1997. It was their third album, Domestica, that brought the band to prominence. In 2001, cellist Gretta Cohn was brought in to further the band's sound. Their fourth album, The Ugly Organ, was released in 2003 and became their most acclaimed work. The album received a 5 out of 5 from Alternative Press and 4 stars from Rolling Stone. After the success of The Ugly Organ, the band decided to take a hiatus in 2004 to work on other projects. The band reunited in 2006 and continued to tour and release new music.
