She soon left to form her band titled Courtney Barnett and The Olivettes. From 2011 to 2014, she played in the Australian psycho-country band Immigrant Union. She created her label, Milk Records, in 2012 that released her first hit single," I've Got A Friend Called Emily Ferris."

Courtney enjoys working and touring with fellow artists like Mick Harvey, Immigrant Union, and Jen Cloher. Courtney has appeared as a musical guest on major US television shows like Good Morning America and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Courtney plays the guitar with her left hand, which has led her to develop her signature style of finger play.
