Contracult was founded in Los Angeles in the late 2010s with a vision of playing a fusion of industrial music, heavy metal and pop-rock. They are part of the industrial revival of the 2010s. Contracult spent a number of years refining their signature sound before releasing their debut singles “Hogtied” and “Violet.” The singles were produced by Josh Schroeder, who had previously enjoyed success with the bands Battlecross and King 810.
“Hogtied” is an original, while “Violet” is a reinterpretation of Hole’s song by the same name. The singles earned widespread praise from critics, earning Contracult comparisons to high-profile acts like Marilyn Manson. They quickly amassed a devoted following in the city’s underground industrial music scene. By the end of 2020, Contracult was signed to Roadrunner Records and had opened for groups like Gost.
