Born in 1968 in New Rochelle, Penn fell in love with rap music at a young age. He practiced making beats and rapping as a teenager, forming the duo Pete Rock & CL Smooth in 1991.
The pair quickly developed a strong reputation for their innovative blend of jazz and soul styles, and for Penn’s socially conscious lyrics which avoided profanity. They released their debut album Mecca & the Soul Brother in 1992, which contained their well-known hit “They Reminisce Over You.” Pete Rock & CL Smooth were soon signed to Elektra Records, through which they released their 1994 sophomore effort The Main Ingredient.
After the dissolution of the duo in 1995, Penn released his solo albums American Me and The Outsider in 2006 and 2007, respectively. He went on to collaborate with a variety of artists including Nujabes, DJ Krush and AZ. His songs have enjoyed commercial success in video games, most notably in NBA Live 08.
