Chuchito Valdes is the stage name for Jesus Rodriguez, a composer, bandleader and jazz pianist from Cuba known for his work with his Grammy Award-winning band Irakere. Born in 1941 in Quivican, Rodriguez showed a talent for music at an early age. A student of the jazz greats, he recorded some of his earliest work in Havana in 1964 with the lineup that would later become Irakere.
In the late ‘60s, he formed the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, with whom he backed several prominent Cuban singers including Omara Portuondo and Elena Burke. In the early ‘70s, he founded Irakere, which would achieve fame for their fusion of Afro-Cuban jazz and songo music. In 1980 the band’s self-titled album would win the Grammy Award for Best Latin Recording.
While playing with Irakere, Rodriguez also produced a slew of acclaimed solo work. To date, he has won four Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards as a solo artist.
