She learned to play drums and saxophone as a child, moving to Minneapolis as a young woman before releasing her debut album Do the Best You Can in 2006. Do the Best You Can garnered significant critical acclaim, with publications like the Star Tribune calling the release an example of “greatness in the making.”
In 2010 Brown released High Noon Teeth, though it would be her 2012 release Back-Road Highways that would catapult her to fame. Back-Road Highways earned Brown NPR’s award for Promising New Voice, Minneapolis’ award for Best Folk Artist and several Best Album awards publications like The Current, City Pages and Lavender Magazine.
