Califone was originally formed in 1997 as the solo project of Tim Rutili, started in the wake of the dissolution of his band Red Red Meat. The project soon took on a life of its own, and within just a few years Rutili had fleshed out the lineup with other Red Red Meat members and local Chicago musicians.
The band incorporates elements from blues-rock, folk music and electronic, though are known for their genre-defying experimentation which often pushes the boundaries of these genres. The majority of their albums are concept pieces ranging from the interpretation of dreams to celebrations of the music of silent films. Califone is a longtime collaborator of Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine and The Fruit Bats. Their work has been widely critically acclaimed for its pioneering instrumentation and occasional use of non-musical art. Califone is most often praised for its landmark 2006 album Roots & Crowns.
