Mannaerts and Mulders were in the Refused Party Program, a Refused tribute band. Mannaerts was also in the band Starfucker with Vanhoegaerden. Through the two bands’ mutual drummer, Brutus was born.
Brutus’ progressive and math-rock sound is what sets them apart. Math rock is made up of complex, atypical rhythmic structures and extended, often dissonant chords, similar to post-rock. The term began as a joke making fun of the music style’s mathematical and irregular time signatures, but it has since become the official name for the style. Steve Reich and Steve Albini are both major influences in the math-rock world.
Brutus released their first EP, Brutu Guru, in 2015 as a split album with The Guru Guru. In 2017, Brutus produced their debut album, BURST, with Jesse Gander. The album was released by Hassle Records in the United Kingdom, and later by Sargent House worldwide. Their second album, Nest, was released in 2019.
