The Billings Outlaws were founded in 2000 as an expansion team in the Indoor Football League, originally playing under the name Billings Thunderbolts. After a strong inaugural season with an 8-6 record, the team briefly played under the name Billings Mavericks. In 2006 the Outlaws achieved a notable upset victory against their rivals the Rapid City Flying Aces, then hosted the National Indoor Football League’s Indoor Bowl to a sold-out crowd.
