Hest grew up in the Bronx, studying piano as a child before teaching himself to play guitar. Hest toured colleges and universities to build his fan base as he released the EP Incomplete, as well as the albums, Come Home and Story After Story until 2004, when he signed with Columbia, releasing multiple EPs and albums before becoming independent again in 2008.

In 2014, he released the album Shouts and Whispers, which had multiple singles off the album featured in various movies and television programs. His album with Judy Collins, Silver Blue Skies, was nominated for Best Folk Album at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards in 2017. He has also collaborated with Rosi Golan and Chrissi Poland.
