Chirino was born in Cuba in 1947 but fled in 1960 when he was a child in an operation known as “Operation Peter Pan,” which allowed Cuban children to get out of the country and to the United States, where they would be placed in foster care. He began his artistic career in Miami and went on to release his first album in 1974.
Over the course of his career, Chirino has released over 20 albums, some of which have won gold and platinum statuses, as well as one winning a Grammy for Best Salsa/Merengue Album in 2006. He was nominated for Best Salsa Album in 2007, the same year he celebrated his 35th anniversary in music. He has since released an album with his wife, singer-songwriter Lissette Alvarez.
