Until Jerry Claiborne took over as head coach in 1972, the team was largely mediocre after the success of the Tatum years. Very few Maryland football tickets were sold during that span. Claiborne brought the team to its first bowl game in nearly 20 years during the 1973 season. He led the Terrapins to a perfect 11-0 in the 1976 season for the first time since 1955.

In 2014, the Terps left the Atlantic Coast Conference and joined the Big Ten. Their inaugural season ended in a 7-5 record and a trip to the Foster Farms Bowl against the Stanford University Cardinal. Coach Mike Locksley took over head coaching duties in 2019. The team impressively put up 142 points in its first two games against Howard University and Syracuse University. At that time, the 63 points against Syracuse broke the team record for most points against a ranked opponent.

The Terrapins have had a number of rivals throughout their history. Their oldest rivalry is with the West Virginia Mountaineers and dates back to 1919. It’s more likely that fans will see the Terps take on the conference rival Penn State Nittany Lions.
