Mitchell began playing music with local bands in Sarnia in the early 1970s. Mitchell formed the band Zoom, going through some name changes before going to Toronto. After Zoom disbanded, Mitchell formed the band Max Webster with Pye Dubois, another musician out of Sarnia. Max Webster released several hits and the group toured extensively.
Mitchell left Max Webster to launch his solo career in 1982. He released a self-titled EP, which spawned the single “Miss Demeanor” that year. In 1983, he was awarded the Juno Award for Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year. He also worked as a session musician. His debut album, Akimbo Alogo, was released in 1984. The single “Go for Soda” became a hit internationally.
