Rigoletto Opera Tickets

Opera fans who buy Rigoletto tickets may have seen this opera staged in many different time periods in addition to its original 19th-century setting. Giuseppe Verdi’s beloved work, which premiered in 1851 at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Italy, is performed often all over the world, and its score has some of the most beautiful music in the operatic canon.

In Act I, the jester Rigoletto makes fun of the many husbands and fathers whose daughters and wives have been seduced by the womanizing Duke. One of them - Monterone - curses Rigoletto, who is terrified because he has a daughter. Meanwhile, Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda meets the Duke, who pretends to be a poor student so he can seduce her. Unwittingly tricked by the angry courtiers who want to punish  Rigoletto, he does not realize he is helping take part in his own daughter’s abduction.

In Act II, Gilda returns to her father and tells him about her abduction. Rigoletto makes a plan for them to leave Mantua, but first, he swears revenge on the Duke. Gilda pleads for him to have mercy on the man she loves.

In Act III, Rigoletto and Gilda follow the Duke to a tavern, where Gilda watches the Duke flirt with Maddalena, the sister of Sparafucile, the assassin. Rigoletto tells Gilda to leave town, disguised as a man. Once she has left, he pays Sparafucile to murder the Duke. Maddalena begs her brother to spare the Duke’s life, and Sparafucile agrees on the condition that he will murder the next man to walk through the door so he can produce a body. Gilda decides to sacrifice herself for her love, the Duke. She walks in dressed as a man and Sparafucile kills her. He puts her body in a bag. Rigoletto sees the bag and assumes it is the murdered Duke, when suddenly, he hears the Duke’s voice, singing the “La donna è mobile” refrain. Shocked, he opens the bag only to discover that Monterone’s curse has come true: it is Gilda’s corpse he is holding.

When subscribers purchase Rigoletto tickets, they may see the opera set in the glamorous world of 1960s Las Vegas in a Metropolitan Opera production, or, in Seattle Opera’s production, set in Berlusconi’s 21st-century Italy, complete with Gilda in pink pajamas.

Rigoletto is staged often enough that there is almost always at least one opera company in the United States performing Verdi’s masterwork, along with several productions mounted abroad. Its popular arias and stunning third-act quartet are still thrilling audiences centuries after Verdi composed them. From Milwaukee to Denmark, from Nashville to Germany, opera fans will be able to see a brilliant production in a city nearest them.
