Modesto, California began as a stop on the railroad connecting Sacramento to Los Angeles. The city itself was established in 1870, and the Modesto Symphony Orchestra was formed 61 years later. At the time, the city had a population of 17,000. This made it the smallest town in America to host a symphony orchestra at the time.
The orchestra began as a volunteer ensemble and over the years attracted professional musicians who joined its ranks. In 1977, they became a fully professional orchestra. The orchestral organization later expanded with the addition of the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra in 1976, the Modesto Symphony Orchestra Chorus in 2001 and the Modesto Symphony Orchestra Youth Chorus in 2017. When the Gallo Center for the Arts, named for the famous E. & J. Gallo Winery family, opened in 2007, the Modesto Symphony Orchestra became their resident company.
