The group was founded in 2014 by vocalist Kai Uwe Faust, who was previously a German tattoo artist specializing in Old Norse tattoos. The group is known for their lyrics originating from Norse and medieval Europe, taking inspiration from runic inscriptions from the Germanic peoples of the Bronze, Iron and Viking Ages.
In 2015, the group self-released their debut album, Ofnir. Their first live performances were in 2017 at Castlefest and the Midgardsblot Metal festival. Their performances from these shows were recorded and put on YouTube with the title Lifa, and the video gained more than 6 million views, allowing the group to grow their following. Lifa was also released as a live album.
