With a mother who sang in the church choir and a father who often listened to Duke Ellington, Porter was exposed to music from an early age. At the age of ten, Porter became friends with another young musician by the name of Joe “Zigaboo” Modeliste, who would eventually become his bandmate in the funk band The Meters. Porter picked up the bass guitar after he was inspired by New Orleans Native Benjamin “Poppi” Francis and has remained a bassist to this day.

In addition to touring the nation, occasionally with acts as big as The Rolling Stones, The Meters were top-tier session musicians. George Porter Jr. still performs with The Meters on occasion, as well as with his other group The Runnin’ Pardners, which he leads. In addition to a staggering number of performance credits, including on work by John Scofield, Harry Shearer and Tori Amos, Porter has released a number of solo albums. It’s Time to Funk, Can’t Beat the Funk! and It’s Life are but a selection of musical works released by the bassist over the years.
Still performing his own concerts, creating music, and sitting in with other musicians, George Porter Jr. is clearly keeping his musical legacy alive, and not slowing down.
