There is overlap in the song style and vocal quality of Emily King and Sara Bareilles, but King's tone is more ethereal.  

When asked how she describes her music, Emily King mentions the John Hughes films of the 1980s, which evoke the nostalgia of youth. Musically, her sound has the vocal color of Prince with the instrumentals of an '80s soundtrack. The passion in King's voice is airy but smooth at the same time, almost as if she's singing/whispering next to you. The songs' melodic hooks are catchy.
