Brown went to the University of Georgia to study film and became a cinematographer afterward. However, he had always been dissatisfied with the quality of cooking shows on television, so he set out to make his own. He enrolled in the New England Culinary Institute in order to prepare for this and graduated in 1997. The pilot for his first show Good Eats aired in July of 1998.

He won the Best Book award in 2003 for his first book, “I'm Just Here for the Food,” has been the recipient of two James Beard awards, and has won the Broadcast Media Award for TV Food Personality/Host.
