They recorded their first tracks in 1984 and were inspired by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The Dirty Dozen brought elements of bebop and funk into the more traditional New Orleans jazz sound. Frequently busking around the French Quarter for tips, but they soon became the house band for a local venue called the Glass House.
In 1992, Ruffins established the jazz quartet the Barbecue Swingers, commonly referred to as the BBQ Swingers. During their shows, Ruffins is famous for cooking up some barbecue and exclaiming, "We partyin'!'" while holding his trumpet or his tongs.
