Its original members were James Robbins as lead singer and lead guitarist, Kim Coletta as bass guitarist, and Adam Wade as the drummer. Bill Barbot would join a few years after the group’s formation, with Zach Barocas replacing Wade in 1992.
Robbins was previously a member of the band Government Issue, the oldest hardcore punk band in Washington, D.C. After the group disbanded in 1989, Robbins created Jawbox. The band made a demo CD and put out their first single through their own Desoto Records label. Desoto Records would later grow into a successful independent record label run. Jawbox’s song "Bullet Park" was featured on Maximumrocknroll Magazine’s 1989 compilation album, and gave the band their first significant mainstream exposure. After the success of their first album, Bill Barbot became a member to flesh out the band’s guitars and vocals. Jawbox recorded their second album Novelty and toured the US.
