Drummer Christian Tanna and guitarist Jagori Tanna, who are brothers, joined forces with bassist Franz Masini and vocalist Edwin Ghazal, who prefers to be called solely Edwin. At first, IME stood for I Am Me, but the band didn’t love it. It is said that Jagori Tanna improvised the name I Mother Earth, which has stuck ever since. In 1992, I Mother Earth signed with the label Capitol Records and EMI Music Canada.
During the recording of their first album Dig, Franz Masini was kicked out of the band and replaced by Bruce Gordon, who had played with the band Rocktopus. Dig was released in 1993 and was well received by fans and critics alike. The album also won a Juno Award for Best Hard Rock Album in 1994 and was a Gold record in Canada. I Mother Earth did have a nine year hiatus from 2003 to 2012, but since 2012, they have continued to make music and tour, selling I Mother Earth tickets in both Canada and the United States.
