Jordan first studied piano, which he took up at the age of six. He was moved to start studying playing the guitar at the age of eleven. He then started to perform in soul and rock ensembles. He received an award at the Reno Jazz Festival in 1976. He went to college at Princeton, majoring in music theory and composition and being mentored by Milton Babbitt. He also worked under Paul Lansky in the field of computer music. While in school, he performed with Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Carter.
