The Hatters play in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and are members of the Pioneer Football League. Stetson College first fielded a football team in 1901, but the school discontinued the sport in 1956 and did not resume it until 2013. The team plays its home games at the 6,000-seat Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand, Florida.
The first recorded football game in the state of Florida took place on Stetson and Forbes' intramural teams in 1894, with the two universities competing against each other. The first intercollegiate athletic contest between varsity sides was held on November 22, 1901. In a game played as part of the Jacksonville Fair, Stetson beat Florida Agricultural College 6-0, one of the four predecessors of the University of Florida. The Hatters' only bowl appearance was in the 1952 Tangerine Bowl, which they won 35–20 to Arkansas State.
