In the spring of 1989, Navarrete began to dip his toes into comedy when he attended the annual Asian Pacific Islander Student Union conference at UC Santa Cruz, where the crowd awaited his performance. After this, he began perfecting his routine and adding characters that reflected his own life. Navarrete believes that there is humor in everything. While his material is more for a Filipino audience, he believes other non-Filipinos can find humor in it.
