They first formed in 1995 when Jeff Timmons dropped out of Kent State University to move to Los Angeles. He met up with a friend from the School for Creative and Performing Arts who introduced him to Nick Lachey. Lachey flew to Los Angeles and, after hitting it off with Timmons, suggested they bring in his friend Justin Jeffre. Nick Lachey was the last member to join the group. He was brought in to replace the original fourth member Jonathan Lipman.
The group worked odd jobs like landscaping and club security to fund talent show appearances. After attracting attention at a Boys II Men Concert, a local radio station offered them a chance to perform on air. That appearance got them in the ears of Montell Jordan, who helped them get signed to Mowtown.
In 1997 they released their debut single “Invisible Man,” which went certified gold and earned them a spot in the top 12 on the Billboard’s Hot 100. In 1998, 98 Degrees topped their previous success with two singles breaking into the top 10. “Because Of You” and “The Hardest Thing” were sensitive, heartfelt ballads that were well on their way to quadruple platinum status by the beginning of 1999.
In the early 2000s, The members of 98 Degrees went their separate ways to pursue solo projects. 2012 brought them back together for a tour with Boys II Men and New Kids On The Block. They went back into the studio the following year to record “98 Degrees 2.0”. This album was followed by their holiday album “Let It Snow,” which was released in 2017. Catch them while you can.
