Nestled within the city’s TruMark Financial Center, the venue is named in honor of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame member and former La Salle University basketball coach Tom Gola.
The Tom Gola Arena was first built in 1997 as the new home of the La Salle University men’s and women’s basketball teams. The teams had not enjoyed an on-campus facility since 1955, and had spent the intervening years playing out of various locations in and around Philadelphia including the Palestra, First Union Spectrum and Philadelphia Civic Center. The arena now serves the university’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as its women’s volleyball team. In the early 2010s, the Tom Gola Arena was also listed as the fencing location for the city of Philadelphia’s 2016 Summer Olympics bid.
