He set out to build a venue that would outshine other Shriner facilities and create an entertainment palace for the city of Richmond. Designed by architects Marcellus Wright and Charles Robinson, the original theater construction cost $1.65 million. The Altria Theater underwent a $10 million renovation in 1994 and started to host theatrical and musical performances. Altria Theater tickets have been sold for both kinds of live entertainment.
The theater’s history includes great performers like Jimi Hendrix and Widespread Panic. Popular Broadway musicals have also been presented at this historic theater in Richmond like Wicked and The Lion King. The theater has held several names. Some include the Acca Temple Shrine, the Mosque Theater and the Landmark Theater from 1995 to 2014. The company Altria funded the big renovation in 2014. The theater was then renamed the Altria Theater. The venue is located at the southwest corner of Monroe Park. It is the largest venue of Richmond Center Stage’s Performing Arts Complex. The venue is located at 6 N. Laurel St., Richmond, VA 23220. It is west of downtown Richmond and across from historic Monroe Park. It is in the middle of the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).
