The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra dates back to 1972 when two newcomers to Wilmington, N.C., wanted their community to have an orchestra. With the support and help of the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Music Department Chair, a small ensemble was formed. The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra began as a volunteer group of 33 musicians, and throughout the decades has grown to encompass more than 80 professional players.
