Amongst his accolades is his appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, OBE, in 2021 for his service to classical music.
Marshall is a second-generation Brit as his parents moved there from Barbados. He started to play piano at the age of three. He was introduced to organ music as a child through church and developed an interest in it. He attended Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester starting in 1971 until 1979. As the recipient of a Foundation scholarship, Marshall attended the Royal College of Music. During that time he also studied organ at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. He did his post-grad work at the Hochschule fur Musik in Vienna.
