The pageant was founded in 1991 by Gary Hall and John Schultz in the vein of the Miss America Pageant. The Miss’d America Pageant takes its name from a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that drag performers always “missed” the Miss America Pageant. Traditionally, the Miss’d America Pageant takes place within two weeks of the Miss America Pageant, and in its early years took the form of satire by awarding winners dead roses and a crown from Burger King. 

In more recent years, the Miss’d America Pageant had adopted a serious tone, often serving as a way to raise awareness for the AIDS Alliance of South Jersey and similar groups.
