Minglewood plays a blend of blues, folk, rock and roll and country.
Minglewood played in his first band, the Rockin’ Saints when he was in his late teens, playing at local high school dances and performing gigs in taverns, even though he was not legally old enough to be in them. In that band, Minglewood played organ and rhythm guitar.

In 1969, while he was in his early twenties, Minglewood formed Sam Moon, Matt Minglewood & The Universal Power with Minglewood sharing lead singing responsibility with Sam Moon. The group’s name was changed to the simpler Moon – Minglewood and were regular players in the Halifax/Dartmouth metro area.
After performing briefly with the group Pepper Tree, Minglewood founded the band Cold Duck. In 1974, he then created The Minglewood Band, touring all throughout Canada and reaching a national audience. Their first album was released in 1975 and the group signed with RCA Records and was nominated for a Juno award for Most Promising Group of the Year. Minglewood launched his solo career in 1985.
