They compete at the Division I level and are members of the ECAC. Colgate began fielding a men’s hockey team in 1916. The program had to take a brief hiatus due to the outbreak of World War I in 1917. It returned in 1920 but went through much of the 1920s without a full team.

The team competed on outdoor rinks throughout the majority of the program’s history. The first indoor ice hockey game was played in 1959. The completion of the indoor rink brought stability to the program as the forces of nature could not intervene with play any longer. Colgate stayed competitive over the next 20 years. They reached their first NCAA tournament in 1981 after finishing the season with more than 20 wins.

The team made the Frozen Four and knocked off Boston University 3-2 to make the National Championship game. Colgate lost to Wisconsin in the national championship game. The 1990 season saw the Raiders win 31 games and gain national attention as a team on the rise.
