The Decemberists are a group of American musicians whose mix of country, pop and alternative rock have made them popular on the Americana and folk circuits with several hit albums. They formed when singer-songwriter Colin Meloy left his home in Montana in 2000 to live in Portland, Oregon where there was a thriving music scene. The current line-up features Meloy with guitarist Chris Funk, pianist Jenny Conlee, bass player Nate Query and drummer John Moen.

Known for literate songs and ambitious treatments, the group's first recording was an EP titled '5 Songs' in 2001 followed the next year by their debut album 'Castaways and Cutouts'. Their second album 'Her Majesty' (2003) led to 'Picaresque' (2005), which reached number 128 on the Billboard 200 and 'The Crane Wife' (2006) which climbed to number 35.

After a break, their concept album 'Hazards of Love' in 2009 hit number five on the Alternative Albums Chart and number 14 on the Billboard 200. Their next release 'The King Is Dead' in 2011 topped both the Billboard 200 and the Alternative Chart and the single 'Down By the Water' earned them a Grammy Award nomination for Best Song. They continued to be a chart presence in America with 'Live at Bull Moose' which reached number 12 on the Americana/Folk Chart.

'We All Raise Our Voices to the Air: Live Songs 04.11.08' went to number five on the Americana/Folk Chart and number 13 on the Alternative Chart and their 2015 release, 'What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World', topped the Americana/Folk Album Chart, reached number two on the Alternative Chart and peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200. They also helped design a card and board game called 'ILLIMAT', which was released in November 2017. In 2018 they announced the release of their eighth album 'I'll Be Your Girl'.
