Rising out of upstate New York, the origins of New York Voices started at Ithaca College. There, Peter Eldridge (baritone) met Kim Nazarian (soprano), Darmon Meader (tenor) and Caprice Fox (soprano). They later met Sara Krieger (soprano) in New York City to make up the original quintet. From their first performance at Preacher’s club in Greenwich Village heads started to turn thanks to their beautiful vocal synergy.
After beginning their rise in 1988, the group was signed to GRP by 1989 and the demand for New York Voices tickets had started to climb. The group’s self-titled first release and the follow-up, 1991s Heart of Fire were both highly–acclaimed but Krieger left after the second album’s release. They originally intended to differentiate themselves from their fellow four-piece local vocal group The Manhattan Transfer but their music ended up doing it for them in time.
