Born in Stanford in 1975, Waller learned to play guitar and piano at an early age. He studied at Yale University as a teenager, where he worked as a producer for a number of local bands and directed The Duke’s Men of Yale. Waller moved to San Francisco after graduation, where he released his debut album Advertising Space. Though met with limited commercial success, Advertising Space earned considerable praise from critics.

Following the release of his follow-up albums Extravagant Gesture and Troubled Times in the early 2000s–both of which received rave reviews–Waller took a turn toward performance art. His piece Into the Dark Unknown: The Hope Chest, commissioned by the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, combined elements from the theater, video installation and folk music. Waller has since taught contemporary song-based performance art at the University of California, Berkeley. He frequently collaborates with dancer and choreographer Zoe Scofield.
