The collective took its name from a Flintstones episode, which parodied Mel Torme’s nickname the Velvet Fog. The group first played together in 1989 and was put together to contrast with the punk and hardcore that was ubiquitous in the Minneapolis music scene at the time.
Different members played with the band at different times. Sample band members who sat in at times Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum and Chris Mars of the replacements. Their first album was released in 1995, called Down by the Old Mainstream. The musicians on the album use their middle names and the street where they were raised as their last names on the album.
