His first band was the group The Main Street Brats, which he formed in high school along with his friend Javier Escovedo at the age of 16. Their first performance was for a Quinceanera.
After the performance, Lopez’s cousin Karton “BaBa” Chanelle was recruited to be a drummer along with Hector Penalosa as a bassist, along with the group assuming the new name “The Zeros.” The new group became regular performers on the L.A. club scene. The group released two singles, including “Don’t Push Me Around” and “Wild Weekend.”

After working on the character and the material for a period of time, Lopez first recorded as El Vez and released the EP The Mexican Elvis in 1991. Multiple studio albums have followed, including two Christmas albums.
