The Chairmen of the Board was formed when General Norman Johnson, who had been the leader of The Showmen in the early 1960s, was teamed with Eddie Custis, Danny Woods and Harrison Kennedy. Each member of the new group was given an opportunity as a lead singer before Norman became the full-time lead singer. 

The group’s single, “Give Me Just a Little More Time,” was released in December of 1969 and sold a million records. It reached number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. Other charting singles for the band include “(You’ve Got Me) Dangling on a String,” “Everything’s Tuesday,” “Pay to the Piper” and “Finders Keepers.” The band also issued the original version of “Patches,” which was a hit for Clarence Clemons and won a Grammy Award in 1971.

Norman died in 2010 from lung cancer, but the band has continued to record and perform. In 2012, the single “You” was released by the band. In 2021, the band began collaborating with Wheeler del Torro to modernize their sound.
